Representing Lexical Polysemy
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper gives an overview of work on a computational approach to representing lexically governed polysemy. The framework is illustrated with an account of the interpretation of compound nouns and with some examples of extended usages of words. I discuss how generative devices can be controlled to avoid an explosion in interpretations a din the number

The effect of polysemy on lexical decision time: now you see it, now you don't.
Gernsbacher (1984) found that number of word meanings (polysemy) did not influence lexical decision time when it was operationalized as number of dictionary definitions. This finding supports her contention that subjects do not store all possible dictionary meanings for words in memory. The present experiments extended Gernsbacher's research by determining whether more psychologically valid mea...
متن کاملRegular Polysemy in WordNet
The importance of describing regular polysemy in a lexicon has often been outlined, especially in the field of natural language processing (for a good overview of this issue, see (Ravin and Leacock, 2000)). Unfortunately, no existing broad-coverage semantic lexicon has been built following this relatively recent advice. And since producing a broad coverage semantic lexicon is a very time-consum...
متن کاملEffects of Polysemy in Lexical Decision and Naming: An Alternative to Lexical Access Accounts
The effects of polysemy (number of meanings) and word frequency were examined in lexical decision and naming tasks. Polysemy effects were observed in both tasks. In the lexical decision task, highand low-frequency words produced identical polysemy effects. In the naming task, however, polysemy interacted with frequency, with polysemy effects being limited to low-frequency words. When degraded s...
متن کاملDemonstration of Multi Statutory of the Adjective “Just” in Modern Adjectival English Lexicon
This article concerns the general functional features of an adjective in modern English, and in particular multistate lexical item “just”, which carries different meanings in different variants of combinatorics. The authors analyze the combinations used with the adjectival lexeme item “just” and reveal the categories that determine the degree of semantic content of each given statement. The nee...
متن کاملSemi-productive Polysemy and Sense Extension
In this paper we discuss various aspects of systematic or conventional polysemy and their formal treatment within an implemented constraint based approach to linguistic representation. We distinguish between two classes of systematic polysemy: constructional polysemy, where a single sense assigned to a lexical entry is contextually specialised, and sense extension, which predictably relates two...
